Linking Oral and Systemic Health

Across the country, Delta Dental is the nation's leader in promoting oral health through our efforts to make dental care more available and affordable.

The benefits of improved oral health extend beyond the mouth, with clear impact on systemic health. According to the U.S. Surgeon General's report, Oral Health in America, "the mouth is a mirror" of health and disease in the rest of the body and the link between oral health and quality of life is becoming stronger than ever.

There is solid and emerging evidence that diseases of the oral cavity can increase the risk for systemic diseases. Over 120 systemic diseases are known to express themselves in the mouth. Today, oral exams can detect previously undetectable disease and dentists are in a unique position to have an impact on reducing the mortality, morbidity and health care costs of "systemic" diseases.

Oral cancer - some grim statistics:

  • Approximately 31,000 Americans are diagnosed with oral cancer each year, claiming more than 9,000 lives. The fastest growing segment being diagnosed is now young people and women, and 25% of all oral cancer patients are non-smokers and non-drinkers.
  • As many people die of oral cancer each year as skin cancer; more each year than: cervical, liver, kidney, testicular cancer or Hodgkin's disease.
  • If detected in its pre-cancerous state, the disease is preventable.

Every Delta Dental of New Mexico plan is designed around preventive benefits. Most plans include coverage for Diagnostic and Preventive services at 100% with no deductible. Make the Delta Dental choice and, if you are a current subscriber, do your part by making sure you take advantage of the routine oral exams covered by your plan.
